SAFETY REMINDERS FROM SWEPCO

  • Downed power lines – Never touch a downed line, or go near it, no matter how harmless it looks. The line could be energized. Don’t touch anything in contact with the line, such as trees, fences or puddles of water. Stay away, and keep others away, especially children and pets. Call SWEPCO or 911 immediately.
  • Portable generator safety – If you use a portable or RV generator, do not plug the generator into your circuit box. Portable generators can “backfeed” electricity up the line and risk the lives of repair workers and the public. Follow the manufacturers’ instructions carefully and plug essential appliances directly into the generator.

Meanwhile, the Caddo Parish Sheriff’s Office urges anyone with damage to report it by calling 318-675-2255. Those who live in Bossier Parish can call the sheriff’s office at 318-965-2203.

FAQs

Why do houses lose power during storms? ›

Strong wind can blow tree limbs or entire trees into power lines causing them to fall to the ground. Severe winds can even break power lines and utility poles, bringing down extensive portions of the infrastructure that delivers power.

Why does the power go out during a hurricane? ›

High winds during hurricanes (or other powerful storm systems) can lead to outages in a variety of ways. Some of the more common scenarios include falling trees bringing down power lines, lines making contact with one another or with tree limbs, and power poles getting knocked over.

Why is half my house no power after storm? ›

If you've lost power to half the power in your house, then it could only be one of two problems. You either have a loose connection on the utility side, or you have a bad main breaker.

How to get power back after a thunderstorm? ›

Call your utility company. Your utility company may not know about your power outage. Calling the utility company from a landline can help ensure that your power company will come as soon as possible. Keep your car gas tank at least half full.

Can you flush the toilet during a power outage? ›

Depending on the amount of water remaining in the pipes, you might be able to flush your toilet several times while the power is out. Eventually, however, your tank won't fill up anymore because the pumps are down. When this happens, you will need to flush your toilet manually by pouring in a bucket of water.

How long does power stay out after a hurricane? ›

Storm Damage

For example, most of the power outages during hurricane season come from damaged equipment from the storm surge. A downed power line can take as little as 2-3 hours for a crew to get out and fix them, but when the storm is bigger, you can expect the power to stay out for days, or sometimes even weeks.

Why does it take so long to restore power after a hurricane? ›

The answer is that restoring power after a major windstorm is challenging: Roads can be closed, downed trees and other hazards abound, and workers must prioritize safety issues such as downed wires.

Why does power go out for a second during storms? ›

It's important to understand that a momentary interruption lasting less than one second is the result of a "safety device" designed to automatically open the circuit to prevent damage that can lead to an extended outage.

Why does my house lose power so easily? ›

However, the three most common causes are natural causes, human error, and overload. Basically, any interruption between power generation and the supply of electricity to homes can cause a power outage. It can stem from inclement weather conditions, human error, equipment failure, and even animal interference.

Can a storm cause low voltage? ›

Partial loss of voltage to one phase indicates most probably that some of the coils on the secondary side are being shorted out of the circuit by water. This is especially likely if the weather head on your service (the place where wires enter your house) looks intact and there's no sign of water in the breaker box.

How long does it take for power to come back on after a thunderstorm? ›

A downed power line can take as little as 2-3 hours for a crew to get out and fix them, but when the storm is bigger, you can expect the power to stay out for days, or sometimes even weeks. The extent of the damage and the efficiency of your local area's electric crew will make a big difference.
