I would consider them to be the same as many (and even most) definitions of zeal contain the word ardent. They are interchangeable though zealous is more-so used after a helping verb (was, is, etc.) and followed by the word “in” while ardent can be used the same way, but is more naturally used as an adverb (ending in ‘ly’), describing an action.
He was zealous in completing his project.
He was ardently completing his project.
The child was zealous in her pursuit of candy.
The child ardently pursues the candy.
