Duties

The IRS Internship Program offers IRS employees who are current students with an opportunity to work and explore new careers. You must meet the definition of a student during the duration of your internship as follows:

An individual accepted for enrollment or enrolled and seeking a qualifying degree or certificate from one of the following:

  • High school; OR
  • College/university; OR
  • Professional, technical, vocational, or trade school; OR
  • Advanced degree program; OR
  • Certificate in a qualifying and accredited educational institution, on a full or half-time basis (as defined by the institution in which the student is enrolled), including awardees of the Harry S. Truman Foundation Scholarship Program under Public Law 93-842.

Students need not be in actual physical attendance, so long as all other requirements are being met. An individual who needs to complete less than the equivalent of a half-time an academic/vocational or technical course load immediately prior to graduating is still considered a student for purposes of this program.

Every academic term (e.g., semester, quarter, etc), you must maintain good academic standing with an overall GPA of 2.0 or higher on a 4.0 scale. An academic year of undergraduate education is defined as 30 semester credit hours, 45 quarter credit hours, or the equivalent in an accredited college or university.

In order to successfully complete the Internship Program, you must complete a minimum of 640 hours of work experience (prior to completing academic program requirements), acquired through the program and successfully complete your course of academic study. If for any reason you do not successfully complete the program, you will be returned to the previous grade of the same or similar position you held within IRS prior to being selected for the Internship Program.

The following are the duties of this position at the full working level. If this vacancy includes more than one grade and you are selected at a lower grade level, you will have the opportunity to learn to perform these duties and receive training to help you grow in this position.

  • Receives, records, sorts, batches, associates, controls, stages, collects, mails, extracts and distributes incoming/outgoing work. Maintains, updates, and purges suspense/closed files; examines and perfects documents; determines; determines header data and numbers return/documents; maintains supplies and prepares requisitions.
  • Performs reoccurring administrative tasks using an automated system which involves: assigning, maintaining, monitoring, or updating work status and inventory records; order research; acknowledging correspondence; administering and performing other support activity.
  • Revises procedures, controls, etc., as indicated by assigned technician. Prepares memoranda, preliminary reports and charts showing findings or recommendations.
  • Prepares and maintains regular production/inventory reports using established formats and sources of data applicable to the program, functional, or organizational reporting requirements. Prepares special reports as directed.
  • Assists technicians/specialist in collecting, organizing and maintaining program and/or functional documentation and materials.

  • Telework Eligible Positions: Telework eligible positions do not guarantee telework. Employees must meet and sustain IRS telework eligibility requirements (e.g., reporting at least twice a pay period to your assigned Post of Duty (POD)) and supervisor's approval to participate in the IRS Telework Program. Employees must also be within a 200-mile radius of their official assigned post-of-duty (POD) while in a telework status. As a reminder - If you are selected for a position, you are responsible for reporting to your designated POD (location) on the negotiated start date or as directed by management.
  • Must be a U.S. Citizen or National and provide proof of U.S. Citizenship. (Birth certificate showing birth in the U.S; Unexpired U.S. Passport; Certificate of Citizenship or Naturalization; or Report of Birth Abroad of a U.S. Citizen (Form FS-240))
  • All selectees must sign a Participant Agreement.
  • This position requires that the successful candidate undergo personnel vetting, which includes a background investigation and enrollment upon onboarding into "Continuous Vetting." Enrollment in Continuous Vetting will result in automated record checks being conducted throughout one's employment with Treasury. The successful candidate will also be enrolled into FBI's Rap Back service, which will allow Treasury to receive notification from the FBI of criminal matters (e.g., arrests, charges, convictions) involving enrolled individuals in near real-time. Federal experience is not required. The experience may have been gained in the public sector, private sector or Volunteer Service. One year of experience refers to full-time work; part-timework is considered on a prorated basis.- To ensure full credit for your work experience, please indicate dates of employment by month/year, and indicate number of hours worked per week, on your resume.

In order to qualify, you must first meet IRS Internship Program eligibility:

You must be enrolled on at least a half-time basis, or accepted for enrollment, and seeking a degree (diploma, certificate, etc.) in a qualifying educational institution; have at least a cumulative (overall) 2.0 grade point average or higher on a 4.0 scale; remain in good academic standing.

Secondly, you must meet any basic requirements of the position and the experience requirements described in the Office of Personnel Management (OPM) Qualification Standards for General Schedule Positions. Administration and Office Support Student Trainee Series
GENERAL EXPERIENCE: Completion of 2 full academic years of post-high school study or an associate degree. OR One (1) year or twelve (12 months) of general experience. The experience should have been progressively responsible clerical, office or other work that indicates ability to acquire to perform the duties of this position.

You must meet the following special requirements: Must be at least 16 years of age.

Education

This position has an education requirement. You MUST submit dated documentation showing current enrollment in a qualifying institution (e.g. letter from the registrar, unofficial transcripts from current semester) by the closing date of the announcement. Education must be accredited by an accrediting institution recognized by the U.S. Department of Education.
