All we ever did was move around
I was always the new kid
Never the cool kid

And all I ever wanted to do
Was to fall in love
Just to be in love

But my heart was racing
My mind was screaming
"You've got your whole life to do these things"
But my legs were shaking
My hands were searching
For her in the backseat of my car

I just lost it
And I can't believe it

I knew I was only sixteen
But I thought I loved her
And it'd last forever

But only if I knew
That she wasn't true
How could she do this to me?

My heart was racing
My mind was screaming
"You've got your whole life to do these things"
But my legs were shaking
My hands were searching
For her in the backseat of my car

I just lost it
And I can't believe it

    Song Meaning

here is what Chris wrote on his blog about what the song is about:

"Here is a little background on the song.

Once up a time...when I was sixteen years old I dated a girl. She was beautiful and very experienced. I was in love about a week and a half into it. Although I had never been in love I was certain. The months rolled on and we grew closer and closer. We shared so many memories and laughs. I had never gotten past first base with a girl before...although; I found myself diving deeper and deeper into the sexual world. Therefore, I grew more attached. About 9 months had past. We had spent so many amazing nights together, told each-other everything to know, and I had lost my virginity to her shortly after the ninth month. I was absolutely certain that I wanted to spend forever in this love trance. But a rude awakening snapped me out of it. One of my closest friends told me that she had slept with one of my "pals" from the tennis team in the last week. I was in disbelief until my "pal" confessed that it was fact. As the days rolled on I found out the truth. She had slept with over 10 people during our relationship. I was mortified and heart-broken for the longest time. From that day forward I wanted to write songs to bring people joy. To help people that were as miserable as I was.The end.

It was a time in my life that I tried to overlook. I had never written a song about that stage; because I tried to forget. "Losing it" is about that point in my journey."

    Song Meaning

I don't think the song is entirely about losing his virginity, but I do think its a key part of the song. I think its just a little more general.

He's an outsider, "always the new kid". He got head-over-heels in love with this girl and it filled that hole in him, he felt for the first time like he belonged. He wants to stay in love, because of how good it makes him feel. At age 16 he's inexperienced and therefor nervous (remember your first couple of dates - firsts are always scary). He doesn't wanna screw this up. The FIRST refrain (but my heart...) is about his nervousness and how things are going too fast and in general losing his love he craves or more specifically losing his virginity. She cheated on him had he known she wouldn't be faithful he could have avoided this pain (if I knew, she wasn't true). The SECOND refrain (but my heart...) is about his overwhelming sadness and quivering in anguish and how she hurt him after the breakup. The long "woooing" is supposed to resemble crying. BAM.

obviously, everyone knows what the song is about.it's the worst feeling in the world to find out that the person you love cheated on you. it's basically them saying "i don't love you." i lost my virginity to a guy who i thought was special. he was the one who said HE loved ME, and at when he said he did i wasn't sure i loved him back. eventually, i realized i really did love him, and i could imagine spending the rest of my life with him. he told me he loved me and meant it every single day, then one day i found out he liked someone else, MY friend. she didn't know we were in a relationship, and when i asked him about it, he didn't deny it. i haven't heard him say he loved me since. :/

i admire Chris so much! he has had to deal with so much sh*t in his life. drugs, alcohol, smoking, at a young age. his parents' divorce, feeling trapped inside of a small town. yet he always come out with a smile and make BEAUTIFUL music. my best friend and i have an NSN song for every experience, and we always change the words for our sitch. i love NSN. haters go die.

Fast Car Tracy Chapman "Fast car" is kind of a continuation of Bruce Springsteen's "Born to Run." It has all the clawing your way to a better life, but in this case the protagonist never makes it with her love; in fact she is dragged back down by him. There is still an amazing amount of hope and will in the lyrics; and the lyrics themselve rank and easy five. If only music was stronger it would be one of those great radio songs that you hear once a week 20 years after it was released. The imagery is almost tear-jerking ("City lights lay out before us", "Speeds so fast felt like I was drunk"), and the idea of starting from nothing and just driving and working and denigrating yourself for a chance at being just above poverty, then losing in the end is just painful and inspiring at the same time. Bron-Y-Aur Stomp Led Zeppelin This is about bronies. They communicate by stomping. Amazing Ed Sheeran Ed Sheeran tells a story of unsuccessfully trying to feel “Amazing.” This track is about the being weighed down by emotional stress despite valiant attempts to find some positivity in the situation. This track was written by Ed Sheeran from the perspective of his friend. From the track, we see this person fall deeper into the negative thoughts and slide further down the path of mental torment with every lyric. Plastic Bag Ed Sheeran “Plastic Bag” is a song about searching for an escape from personal problems and hoping to find it in the lively atmosphere of a Saturday night party. Ed Sheeran tells the story of his friend and the myriad of troubles he is going through. Unable to find any solutions, this friend seeks a last resort in a party and the vanity that comes with it.“I overthink and have trouble sleepin’ / All purpose gone and don’t have a reason / And there’s no doctor to stop this bleedin’ / So I left home and jumped in the deep end,” Ed Sheeran sings in verse one. He continues by adding that this person is feeling the weight of having disappointed his father and doesn’t have any friends to rely on in this difficult moment. In the second verse, Ed sings about the role of grief in his friend’s plight and his dwindling faith in prayer. “Saturday night is givin’ me a reason to rely on the strobe lights / The lifeline of a promise in a shot glass, and I’ll take that / If you’re givin’ out love from a plastic bag,” Ed sings on the chorus, as his friend turns to new vices in hopes of feeling better.
