I've been meaning to try RedFall ever since it got the big 60 FPS patch last fall. I have finally gotten around to it and have put in about 8 hours over the last 2 days and I have to say that I am really enjoying it. Enough that I felt like I needed to make a post in case anyone else has thought about picking it up given the overwhelming negativity in the discourse around it.

Here are the reasons I really like it:

Atmosphere & Visuals. I love the rich, colorful and stylized visuals around the city.

Open World (Compact & Dense). I love that size and design of the open world. I despise overly large city open worlds where you are just looking at your minimap while you drive pass countless unrecognizable streets. This game's open world is small and compact and I can navigate it using landmarks. Slowly creeping and exploring the world is satisfying.

Non linear mission structure. Contrary to a popular criticism of the game, I have found that most mission do indeed have multiple ways to attack it. For example I just did a mission where you could slowly snipe your way with conveniently placed sniping spots, sneak in through the roofs or get in through the sewers. Reviews made me feel like there was none of this and this is completely false.

Combat is fine. The combat feel and enemy AI is similar to how it feels in Dishonored and Deathloop which means it's not great. Enemies have set patrol patterns and if alerted will chase you in a fairly straight line until they forget about you and return to their patrols. This ain't Halo but this narrative that it is demonstratively worse in this game is wrong imo. With that said, there is just more combat in general in this game so perhaps that bought more attention to this weaker aspect of Arkane games.

Story/Cutscenes/lore is weak but non intrusive. Better cutscenes and dialogue was a huge missed opportunity, especially the NPC/Survivors lack of dialogue. With that said, the lore and notes scattered around the world are interesting to read and it's not like the game is full of long bad cut scenes, it just could do a lot more.

Conclusion. This game is like a hybrid of Dishonored, Borderlands and "pretty" AA shooters(i.e.Shadow Warrior, Immortals of Aveum) with a Stylish Stephen King aesthetic. If this sounds like you're kind of game, I think you actually would enjoy this game. Might be a good "Halloween" game.

I've actually been thinking about returning to give it a go with the 60fps update. I didn't totally hate it when I tried it originally but the frame rate + launch state was a major turn off.

I wonder if they have one more update in them with the promised characters and then that'll be it… maybe around the 1 year mark? What a shame this release was.

I played it post 60fps patch with my gf, and it was her first shooter ever, and we also had a really good time with it

That said, I went in with my expectations firmly in check, and when I consider the types of games Arkane has made in the past, then it's a really disappointing game in many respects

With that said, it's a fun time. It's not great, but it's decent. It's very similar to Far Cry, but without all the bloat and with an actual novel setting/hook

Could the AI be better? Yes. Is the loot that compelling? Not really, but is it a cool world to run around in shooting people and vampires? Yeah, it's decent

I think it took us about 17 hours to beat as well, which is a good length for this type of game

I would have loved a SP stealth focused game set in this world though, so it's a shame it's a co-op shooter and not that, but it's a decent game for that it is. Not best in class, but certainly not the worst

I enjoyed my time with the game. It didn't really feel like they hit their own internal goals for what they wanted the game to be. But it was fun for a while.

Yeah, it's a decent game and while some criticism was absolutely valid, I still had fun with it. Glad you're enjoying it!

I've completed the campaign twice, once SP (as survival horror) and then co-op with my partner and had good times both times. There are plenty of things to like and some even to love in Redfall, but it's far from perfect and contains numerous smaller and bigger flaws.

I played on PC so I had a (shaky) 60+fps and thought it was alright. Wasn't the worst game in the world, but definitely a huge let down vs. what could have been. It was kind like empty calories. 5/10 experience for me, but the shooting and city/burial point exploration was ok. The art direction, sound design, and gunplay were all pretty solid and it can look really moody and atmospheric at times. I think Deathloop was a more refined, complete experience, though I still haven't completed that whereas I've finished Redfall.

LOL no I just got distracted with other games. I feel like I'm probably like 60% through the leads.

There's still a bit of traversal stutter bc unreal engine open world game, but in terms of framerate it's much higher and less fluctuating.

I had fun with it. Need to go back because I got side tracked. Really fun gameplay loop, I thought.
