The future of the professional vacation rental industry is being built now!Crucial inflection points are forcing us to evolve - and creating big opportunities. Standards and expectation are at the core of our success as an industry. This week's The Art of Hospitality Podcast episode is a wide-ranging discussion with Ashley Ching from Inhaven that focuses on the HUGE opportunity to develop vacation rental standards based on beds, baths, and kitchens. Hotels went through a similar standards evolution in the 1980's & 1990's. Hotel brands don't manage the large majority of properties. They manage the standards and the brands. Local managers manage the properties and guests. How the heck can/will that work for vacation rentals?!? Great question. It's time for vacation rental pros to learn and evolve similar to hotels. But it's not going to be easy. We've seen a lot of great ideas die over the years. Setting standards and expectations MUST be a focus for us all. This is a great discussion at a crucial time. We cover...- What are the standards in VR; basic, mid, premium, luxury?- Industry economies of scale- Expectations- Marketing/communications- Opps team benefits - Focus on bed, baths, kitchens- Consistency & Quality-How does VR industry scale?- Hotels went through this in the 80’s & 90’s; good night sleep is not a luxury- Match bed & bath to compete w/hotels: kitchens immediately set VR apart- Segment inventory to set guest & homeowner expectations- How will standards be executed?- VR pros need to push standards- ROI? - initial cost w/wholesale and ongoing, time efficiencies, 5% increase in occupancy, 15% increase in ADR's- Consumers more discerning; crave uniqueness but need trust of standards- 3rd party setting standards?- OTA’s = 15%-20% hotels; 69% VR!!!- Build like hotels; but lacking National VR brands - creating them now!- Brands need to have meanings- OTA’s do not set standards, they confuse the consumer because their goal is to maximize supply- Reviews are broken- This is the first step at a crucial inflection point- Ashley Ching - landing page of Inhaven partners?https://lnkd.in/edpQMYsB

How does a missing broom turn into the guest talking about Moving Mountains at the restaurant? A missing broom? Is that really a big deal? The Art of Hospitality Podcast coming in hot for the first podcast of the new year. Its January 3rd and now we have to figure out how we top this one for the rest of the year. Robin Craigen and his team are the model for this industry. And make no mistake about it, it didn't just happen to work out that way. Robin shares the hits and the misses that have come through the journey. He is as authentic as it gets. My big takeaways - Be proactive. Be clear on your goals. Be authentic. Deliver on your commitments and be unreasonable with your hospitality. In 2024, in addition to picking a song that best describes you, we are also asking each guest who they would like us to have on the podcast. We're still trying to nail you down Will Guidara. Lets give the people what they want! Come join us on The Art of Hospitality Podcast.

Just listened to this episode in whichZach BusekrusinterviewsBen Wolffabout the vision for his new landscape hotel project. The concept is fabulous: he describes an Earth Lodge with a green roof, natural pools, grottos, and swimming holes with waterfalls. And I learned two new phrases --"Building in Public", an apt descriptor for online marketing while a project is underway, and"alternative to aquifer capture", which is how the designers and engineers are going to address the water usage at this event space. Techniques such as rainwater capture and pulling water from the air are things I believe we need to start encouraging.Unique hospitality, thanks for the episode!

Profitability. It took 50+ episodes for a guest on The Art of Hospitality Podcast to put a primary focus on profitability. The last 15 years were a wild ride in the vacation rental industry. Outside money (PE, VC, IPO, etc. 💰) poured into the industry - on the vendor, manager, and homeowner sides. Growth trumped profitability. Rising tides lift all boats. And the growth has been tremendous. On the flip side... “Only when the tide goes out do you learn who has been swimming naked.” - Warren BuffettCompanies do not remain in business if they are not profitable. It's as simple as that. WeWork, Stay Alfred, Lyric, Domio, Front Desk, Here, etc. This list will continue to grow. The companies that have prepared for the outgoing tide will thrive. Challenges will become opportunities. On paper, Roami may have similar business models to some of the failed companies, but their execution is entirely their own. We had the pleasure of chatting with Brandreth Canaley on this week's The Art of Hospitality Podcast episode. How is Roami zigging when others have zagged?...- Deep focus on markets rather than wide - Timing- Strong focus on profitability- Willingness to learn and adapt- Ability to make tough decisions- ** Tech off-the-shelf ** (this feels like a very strong difference to me 🤔)Enjoy the listen (PS - we ❤️ reviews)...
